Death row inmate gets pillow to help him breathe during execution

The state's prisons system plans to give the pillow to death row inmate Alva Campbell on Wednesday (15 November) for breathing issues he may experience while lying flat, Fox8 Cleveland reported.

Dr. James McWeeney noted there were no objective findings such as increased pulse rate or breathing to corroborate Campbell's anxiety.

Alva Campbell, 69, will lie on the pillow as a three-drug cocktail will be administered to execute Campbell after he was convicted for the kidnapping and killing of an 18-year-old Columbus man. Campbell was on parole at the time after being charged with aggravated murder from a 1972 killing.

Campbell has also requested to be executed by firing squad, citing that a prison nurse was unable to find a suitable vein for an IV. However, he recommended allowing Campbell to lie "in a semi-recumbent position" during the execution.

The 69-year-old inmate has severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder due to his heavy smoking habit.

The prisoner's attorneys say he uses a walker, relies on a colostomy bag, requires four breathing treatments a day and may have lung cancer.

Campbell has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to stop his execution, saying he's too ill to execute.

Prison department spokeswoman JoEllen Smith said Monday that Campbell's "medical condition and history are being assessed and considered in order to identify any necessary accommodations or contingencies for his execution". 20, 2017, rejected a request for mercy from Campbell, a condemned inmate who argues he had such a bad childhood and is in such poor health that he should be spared from execution next month. He was paroled in 1992 and, in 1997, he overpowered a Franklin County sheriff's deputy while in a wheelchair.

Campbell fled, carjacked another vehicle and tried to kidnap two more people before he was found by deputies hiding in a tree, Dayton Daily News reported.

Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich rejected clemency for Campbell last week.

On Tuesday, the state said it was starting final preparations for Campbell's execution.

Alva Campbell is scheduled to be executed on November 15.
