A desperate rescue attempt managed to save half of a pod of sperm whales which beached off the coast of Aceh, Indonesia.

WWF Indonesia confirmed 10 whales were stranded on Monday, seven of whom were returned to the water by Navy officials.

Though unusual, whale beachings have been seen in other parts of Indonesia, a vast archipelago of over 17,000 islands. Autopsies will be carried out on the dead animals.

'It is best to wait until high tide, but we are concerned they might die, ' Sapto Prabowo from the Natural Resource Conservation Agency said.

Some of the whales suffered from injuries but it was not clear about the cause of the wounds, according to the media.

"One of the most common patterns with mass strandings is that one or two whales will initially strand".

More than 250 of whales died as rescuers desperately attempted to return them to the water.

"The stranded whales were first found by villagers and sailors fishing around the place", he added.
