The Duchess of Cambridge's uncle has admitted hitting his wife in the face and knocking her unconscious after a drunken argument on the way home from a charity event.

'He then describes how Mr Goldsmith punches her hard in the face using a left hook.

At Westminster Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Goldsmith admitted to punching his wife in the face after they spent the evening at the Home House private members' club in Portman Square, Marylebone on October 13.

Mrs Goldsmith asked Mr Shepherd to call the police.

Prosecutor Kate Shilton told the court Mrs Goldsmith fell down after her husband threw what was described by their taxi driver, Daniel Shepherd, as a "left hook".

"Both parties are drunk, they had been drinking through... He says: 'She appears to be unconscious, she isn't moving"'.

Ms Shilton said: 'She (Mrs Goldsmith) then becomes upset, starts crying and uses some railings to assist her'. When he challenged Goldsmith over his actions, the entrepreneur allegedly became aggressive towards him.

After the incident, Goldsmith was described as "panicked and walking in and out of the house, trying to get her to go back in the house".

After pleading guilty to one count of assault by beating, Gary, 52, has been released on bail until November 21, when he will be sentenced, reported the Evening Standard.

The court heard he was apologetic for his actions.

It carries a maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment.

Mr Goldsmith is the younger brother of Carole Middleton and attended the weddings of both her daughters - the Duchess of Cambridge and Pippa Middleton.

Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot reportedly told probation officers that Gary is likely to face a community service order but that she is "really looking at how to protect this lady from this man in the future, so it doesn't happen again".
