President Rodrigo Duterte has promised Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev that two Russian nationals charged of drug smuggling in the country will get a "fair trial".

According to the US State Department, by the end of January 2018, the US administration will be able to apply extraterritorial American sanctions against legal entities and individuals cooperating with sanctioned Russian citizens.

An MOU between the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines and the Federal Service for Intellectual Property of the Russian Federation; the Agreement on Cooperation between the Commission on Audit of the Republic of the Philippines and the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation; and the Agreement of Cooperation and Partnership between Philippine company Vi Holding LLC and Russian company Global Ferronickel Holdings Inc., were also signed.

He is also expected to deliver an address at the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit.

The head of the Russian government Dmitry Medvedev said that new U.S. sanctions against the Russian Federation would undermine the relations between the countries for decades.

Russia Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev says he has had a brief conversation with US President Donald Trump about the two countries' relations at a summit in the Philippines.

In response, Prime Minister Medvedev said Russian Federation is likewise ready to expand its ties with the Philippines in the areas of politics, cultural, trade and economic cooperation.

"No doubt we will keep standing by your side, we'll keep assisting you in this very important and sensitive theme and along this track of fight against terrorism in the course like bringing or restoring law and order", he added.

Duterte began his remarks by thanking Russian Federation for the 5,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles it gave to the Philippine military.

The President also thanked Russian Federation for its assistance on a "crucial moment" during the rebellion in Marawi City.

The President also brought up the topic of two Russian nationals namely Yuri Kirdyushkin and Anastasia Novopashina, who are now detained in the Philippines due to drug-related charges.

"Whether true or not, we will find out but I will see to it that they are treated fairly", he added.

Kirdyushkin was arrested by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) October past year after the Bureau of Customs (BOC) discovered around 7.4 kilos of suspected powdered cocaine and 2.5 kilos of liquid cocaine inside his luggage at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). I asked him again.

Anastasia Novopashina, meanwhile, was arrested at NAIA after Customs officials found in her possession high-grade cocaine.

Duterte also thanked Medvedev for considering to allow the Philippines to exhibit Filipino products in Russian Federation.

He told Medvedev the Philippines only need a "small opening" to reach this market.

"But we intend to build a house where we can exhibit our products".

Medvedev, whose words were relayed to Duterte through a translator, responded by saying Russian is ready to expand its ties with the Philippines in "all the areas and dimensions including politics and trade economic cooperation, cultural ties".
