The HTC Vive Focus Doesn't Need A PC Or Mobile To Work

HTC has finally taken the lid off its standalone VR headset after months of teasing. The VR headset is exclusive for the Chinese market only but its availability and pricing details haven't been announced. "As the VR industry leader in China, it is our duty to help reduce market fragmentation and provide content developers with more ways to make money". "Now you can essentially do most of the things that you could do on a high-end machine on a standalone".

"The combination of Snapdragon's ultra-low power, high performance VR coupled with the new Vive Wave VR open platform will help content developers deliver best-in-class mobile VR experiences to users". Perhaps the only surprising bit of info is that the Focus comes with a 3DoF controller, though I was assured that it will still give "a very good experience" when paired with the 6DoF headset. The company said that it handed out 500 priority vouchers to developers who were present at VDC 2017. The company also revealed that 35 developers have committed to creating software for the Vive Wave platform. It's a standalone VR headset that doesn't require a PC or mobile phone. Today, the company announced that the headset would be known as the Vive Focus. According to Graylin, this can be applied to a classroom where the teacher is doing a demonstration, while the students are all equipped with a Focus each and can see each other in the same virtual space. Other similar use cases include Second Life-like social platforms, or it can be something as simple as watching movies with friends in a virtual cinema - not an entirely new concept but now you can do so pretty much anywhere you want. It's basically Google Daydream, but changed enough to be allowed into China. HTC are hoping that this open platform will prevent the fragmentation of VR standards, and and as such are integrating the existing Viveport platform into Vive Wave. We'll update y'all as soon as we find out, and stay tuned for our upcoming hands-on later.
