Radhika Jones succeeds Graydon Carter as Vanity Fair's editor in chief

Carter's exit from Vanity Fair was the first in a "mass exodus" of top editors stepping down from their long-time positions at major magazines, including Nancy Gibbs departing from Time, Robbie Myers from Elle, and Cindi Leive from Glamour.

"There is nothing else out there quite like Vanity Fair", Jones said in a statement.

The former New York Times books editor will be the magazine's fifth editor in chief since its modern revival in 1983, publisher Condé Nast announced Monday following a report of her appointment that was published over the weekend.

Vanity Fair is published by Condé Nast and is based in New York City. "It doesn't just reflect our culture - it drives our understanding of it".

While his departure has been rumored for years, a New York Times story on September 7 announcing Carter's plan to leave the magazine after 25 years shocked the media, fashion and entertainment industries. She begins her new gig at Vanity Fair on December 11, overseeing all content development, production and consumer experiences for the magazine's numerous platforms, Condé Nast said.

While Time and Elle have tapped new top editors, the magazine world has anxiously been awaiting the pick for Carter's replacement.

On Monday, Jones' most recent employer, the New York Times, described her hire at Vanity Fair as a "surprise choice". Anna Wintour, the longtime editor in chief of Vogue and artistic director at Condé Nast, called Jones "a fearless and brilliant editor whose intelligence and curiosity will define the future of Vanity Fair in the years to come".
