Following former Vice President Joe Biden's hints that he might run for president in 2020, a poll indicated that he would likely beat President Donald Trump if he ran for re-election.

The Politico/Morning Consult poll said Biden would take 46 percent of the vote, compared to 35 percent for the wildly unpopular Trump.

Among white voters, Biden stood at 41 percent and Trump at 40.

In a race between Trump and a generic Democrat, the poll finds the Democrat leads by a slightly larger percentage, 48 to 34 percent.

The well-documented close relationship between Barack Obama and his then-vice president, Joe Biden, has made for some comic relief on the internet. He has said he is "not closing the door" on a White House bid in 2020. "I would say, 'no, '" Biden told "The Today Show".

Biden, who previously served as a US senator representing DE, also recently challenged Trump's nationalist "America first" policies.

The poll was conducted from November 9 to 11 among 1,993 registered voters.
