Friends and colleagues are "shocked and saddened" by the death of Saskatchewan Party MLA Kevin Phillips, says Premier Brad Wall.

The City of Melfort is paying tribute to former Mayor and current MLA Kevin Phillips with flags at half mast at City Hall.

Phillips died suddenly on Monday, according to a news release sent out by the provincial government.

"Kevin was back in Regina yesterday, getting ready for another week of doing what he loved to do - representing the people of Melfort", said Wall. "A life that is well remembered".

"Kevin was an extremely kind man, he always took time to speak to me and many of our colleagues, he often shared with me advice, wisdom, life and politics", NDP interim leader Nicole Sarauer recalled.

First elected to the Legislative Assembly in 2011 and reelected in 2016, Phillips was serving in the Legislative Assembly as deputy whip for the government side.

Before becoming an MLA, Phillips was an active member of the Melfort business community. The North East Outreach and Support Services' shelter was the first since 1989.

Wall said it is a hard day and several other MLA's on both sides of the legislature paid condolences on the passing of Phillips.

Phillips, who was 63, was married with four children and five grandchildren.
