Saudi Arabia's United Nations ambassador is denying that there has been an embargo on Yemen, saying "a temporary procedure" was taken for a few days to ensure the safety and security of Yemenis and Saudis and supplies were available.

"There is no embargo", Ambassador Abdallah Al-Mouallimi said. "There are many sources of supply to Yemen, even during the past week or so".

The Saudi-led coalition hopes that will prevent "the smuggling of weapons, ammunitions, missile parts and cash that are regularly being supplied by Iran and Iranian accomplices to the Houthi rebels", the statement said.

A top leader of Yemen's Shiite rebels who are at war with a Saudi-led military coalition is vowing retaliation against the oil-rich kingdom over its disastrous blockade of the war-torn country.

The Saudi-led coalition fighting rebels in Yemen shut down the country's land, sea and air borders a week ago in response to a missile attack by the Iran-backed Houthis that was intercepted near Riyadh. The Saudi closure had drawn worldwide condemnation and fears of a worsening humanitarian disaster in Yemen.

He also said that the more the blockade tightens, the more the Houthis will develop their abilities to "respond to the assault of the enemy".

After two years of a devastating war, the Houthis still control much of Yemen's north while the south falls under the embattled President of Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, whose government is recognized by the worldwide community and who is supported by the Saudi-led coalition.

"The first step in this process will be taken within 24 hours and involves reopening all the ports in areas controlled by" Yemen's internationally recognized government, which the coalition backs, read the mission's statement.

Flights between Egyptian capital Cairo and Yemen's port city of Aden resumed after an 8-day hiatus, according to an official of Yemen's national flag carrier on Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia and the USA have accused Iran of supplying the ballistic missile used in that attack.
