A man police are calling a "highly risky psychopath" has escaped the Hawaii State Hospital and left the island of Oahu on a charter plane. Hawaii authorities are searching for Saito, who was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity, after he escaped from Hawaii State Hospital in Honolulu on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, and flew to Maui. He was only on Maui for about an hour and a half before he purchased a ticket to board a flight bound for San Jose, California, possibly using another name, sources tell Maui Now.

Sources say 59-year-old Randall Saito took a cab to meet the charter plane shortly after he escaped Sunday.

A purported necrophiliac who authorities likened to a serial killer may be in the Bay Area after escaping from a Hawaiian psychiatric hospital over the weekend, according to authorities and a news report.

In 2015, a judge denied a motion for Saito to be granted passes to leave the hospital's grounds without an escort. Authorities asked anyone with information on Saito to call their local police.

Saito was committed to the hospital in 1981.

A subsequent press release at 11 a.m. indicates that Saito did indeed "catch a flight off-island". But prosecutors objected, saying Saito fit the criteria of a classic serial killer.

The Hawaii Department of Health operates the hospital, which houses over 300 patients in Kaneohe.
