India Advances Launch Of Euro-VI Fuels For Smog-hit Delhi

Delhi to get BS-VI compliant fuel from April 2018

BS-VI emission norms, considered the best in the world, will however, make vehicles cost more.

"Happy to share that Government has chose to prepone the introduction of BS-VI grade Fuel in NCT of Delhi w.e.f. 1st April 2018 in place of 1st April 2020 as a honest effort to curb the vehicular pollution in Delhi and adjoining areas", Pradhan said. "OMCs have also been asked to examine the possibility of introduction of BS-VI auto fuels in the whole of NCR area w.e.f 01.04.2019", the ministry said in a statement.

The Ministry of Petroleum and natural Gas has successfully introduced the BS-IV grade transportation fuels across the country from April, 1, 2017.

"This measure is expected to help mitigate the problem of air pollution in NCT of Delhi and surrounding areas", the ministry added.

According to a study released by Centre for Science and Environment, air pollution claims at least 10,000-30,000 lives a year in Delhi.

BS-IV fuels contain 50 parts per million (ppm) sulphur, while BS-V and BS-VI grade fuel will have 10 ppm sulphur.

The decision comes against the backdrop of the "severely" poor air quality in Delhi and neighbouring states.

The move will now require auto companies to get ready with BS-VI-compliant vehicles by the said date.

The automobile industry, which contributes 7.5% to the country's gross domestic product, is still anxious whether refineries are will be able to supply sufficient BS-VI-grade fuel across the country, even though the government has vowed to do that.

Delhi's air quality reached hazardous levels last week, prompting the local government to contemplate enforcing an odd-even road rationing scheme under which vehicles with licences ending in odd and even numbers would ply on the roads on alternate days.

However, manufacturers fear that the automotive industry could be later forced by a quasi-judicial body like National Green Tribunal (NGT) to either launch BS-VI vehicles or halt sales in Delhi altogether.
