Shooting reported at Northern California elementary school

The gunman was shot by officials, according to the sheriff's department. He said investigators were still trying to confirm the identity of the killer, who he said was armed with a semiautomatic rifle and two handguns.

Johnston said the gunman, who has not been identified, went on his shooting spree after stealing a neighbor's vehicle and then tried to gain access to the school but was unsuccessful as it was on lockdown.

Wounded students were medevaced to nearby hospitals. The building was evacuated and students moved to a safe location, police said.

The shooter was killed by law enforcement.

Posts on social media showed Rancho Tehama Road being closed off with yellow crime tape, and students' parents stuck behind the road block.

The alleged shooter often fired multiple rounds during the early morning hours, and Flint said living near him was "hell".

The shooting is "just devastating" for the small, tight-knit community, she says.

"The insane thing is that the neighbour has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines", Flint said. "This guy has been insane, and he's been threatening us and everything".

A person with the username Javier Figueroa tweeted that the shooting had taken place at his brother's school.

The elementary school is located on the outskirts of Corning, an olive oil-producing town of around 8,000 people about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of the state capital Sacramento. They heard the shooting from about a quarter-mile away and immediately corralled all of the students inside and locked down the facility.
