A powerful quake struck the South Korean city of Pohang on Wednesday, with local media reporting that resulting tremors were felt hundreds of kilometers away in Seoul.

The Korea Meteorological Administration says there were smaller tremors of magnitudes of 2.2 and 2.6 just a few minutes before the main natural disaster.

The most powerful quake recorded in the south was a 5.8-magnitude tremor that hit the southeastern city of Gyeongju in September a year ago. No casualties have been reported yet.

South Korean media showed crumbled walls piled on parked cars, broken windows from some buildings and elementary school students taking shelter on a playground. An aftershock of 3.6-magnitude took place in an area 7 km north of the coastal city, followed by third and fourth shocks.

Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power said nuclear power plants in the country are operating normally. People say the tremor was strong enough to have parts of buildings crack or fall off, and could even be felt by residents in the capital Seoul, which is more than 300 kilometers away.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in was briefed on the quake on his flight to Seoul after ending a weeklong trip to Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.
