PM, COAS to hold meeting on Islamabad situation today

Sources said that the COAS had voiced concern over the suspension of broadcast of news channels.

The federal government took the initiative of summoning Pakistan army in the Federal Capital after an operation launched to remove the three-week long sit-in at Faizabad caused the further deterioration in the overall law & order situation.

The operation that had commenced early Saturday morning to clear Faizabad Interchange from protestors staging a sit-in was put on hold later in the day - suspended at approximately 2:30 PM local time, according to reports. Protests in various parts of the country have also erupted after the operation started. Rangers were called in Punjab to maintain law and order.

The situation, nevertheless, remains tense in the federal capital.

The Ministry of Interior issued Saturday night a statutory regulatory order (SRO) to authorize the deployment of the Pakistan Army to aid civil power to control the law and order situation in the Islamabad Capital Territory. However, it said that deliberation on certain aspects needs to be made prior to the deployment of troops in Islamabad.

The Army added that its troops are "traditionally not just used for dispersal of crowd/protestors but to quell commotion".

Thousands of riot police and paramilitary personnel on Saturday morning fired tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon at the protesters in an attempt to dislodge them from a major highway into Islamabad.

By midday, the demonstrators appeared to have beaten back the police to roadblocks located several kilometres away from the site of the protest.

The change - dubbed a clerical error by the government - was immediately fixed as an amendment was passed later.

More than 125 people were wounded in Saturday's failed crackdown, and police superintendent Amir Niazi said 80 members of the security forces were among the injured.
