USA shopping season starts with record high online sales

Cyber Monday the annual internet bonanza comes after Black Friday and Thanksgiving online sales surged to record highs

Early estimates from ShopperTrak, a data analytics company that measures the number of shoppers at stores, said foot traffic "decreased less than one percent when compared to Black Friday 2016".

Black Friday was huge for online shopping, but Cyber Monday could be even bigger.

Amazon said Friday that orders were being placed "at record levels", with more than 200,000 toys sold in the first five hours of the day, CNN reported.

According to the retail analytics firms, Black Friday and Thanksgiving online sales in the United States towered too high records as shoppers got deep discounts and bought more on their mobile devices, announcing a promising start to the important holiday season.

Online sales at the 100 largest U.S. Web retailers totaled approximately $7.9 billion on Black Friday and Thanksgiving, marking a almost 18 percent increase from 2016, according to Adobe Analytics, the research arm of software company Adobe.

That number is according to Adobe Analytics, which measures transactions at the largest 100 USA web retailers, on Saturday.

Customers spent a record-high $5 billion on Black Friday alone, compared to $3.34 billion previous year, Adobe Analytics said. Desktop sales came in at 34 percent, down from 42 percent past year. Data from multi-channel commerce platform Shopify showed that online sales experienced incredible growth over previous year. According to ShopperTrak, a Tyco Retail Solutions brand, preliminary brick-and-mortar shopping data from Thanksgiving Thursday and Black Friday showed that overall shopper visits to retail stores was down 1.6 percent compared to past year. As online-savvy businesses continue to gobble up more and more of the market share, companies like Macy's (M), JCPenney (JCP), Gap (GPS) and Sears (SHLD) have suffered.

"There has been a significant amount of debate surrounding the shifting importance of brick-and-mortar retail, and the fact that shopper visits remained intact on Black Friday illustrates that physical retail is still highly relevant and, when done right, profitable", Field said in a statement.

Meanwhile, National Retail Federation said some 164 million consumers have participated in the holiday weekend shopping, either online or in-store. The shopping season traditionally culminates just ahead of Christmas, ad retailers are hoping to rake in additional revenues.
