This afternoon however, the court was told that following a review of the evidence, prosecutors now believe it was a premeditated crime.

The officer said McKinney, who lives in Convoy, County Donegal, posed a flight risk and could interfere with witnesses.

'People have expressed a genuine fear of his actions should he be released, ' the officer added. He will appear in Omagh Magistrates Court tomorrow morning (Tuesday).

A defence lawyer told the court that McKinney has "vehemently denied the allegation".

McKinney was also charged with possession of a Class C drug, namely Zopiclone.
