Apple Reportedly Developing 6.1-Inch LCD iPhone With Metal Back Case

The iPhone X Plus is also mooted to come with dual SIM support. This is in spite of Apple's decision to move forward with OLED screens for its flagship handsets. The OLED iPhones will come in two sizes: 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch.

Price wise, the small 4.7-inch iPhone 8 starts at $699, while the bigger 5.7-inch iPhone 8 Plus starts at $799. iPhone X is of course much pricier at $1,149.

While Consumer Reports called the phone an "innovative device with a fantastic camera and attractive display", the iPhone X lost to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus in a full comparison of the phones because it was flimsy. "This means Apple could be forced to reveal too many of its product plans to a rival, which would be a concern", Chiou said.

According to KGI Securities, the 2018 LCD iPhone would "differ significantly" from the OLED models. In other words, it's entirely possible that every new iPhone model we see next year will completely abandon Touch ID in favor of Face ID.

Nikkei added that the LCD model will have a metal back, which suggests it might not pack newer technologies such as wireless charging.

The metal casing for the 2018 LCD iPhone will be supplied by Casetek, which is a subsidiary of Apple's manufacturing partner Pegatron.

That's the word from a new report on Business Insider, citing supply chain sources, backing up claims made by analyst Ming Chi Kuo last month. The Korean company is the sole supplier of OLED displays for the iPhone X. Apple will maintain a lineup of LCD iPhones until it has another supplier of OLED screens.

NIkkei's report does not mention the design of the phones' front panel.

The publication published its results from testing the iPhone X's display, camera, battery life, and durability.

Kuo has also claimed that the 6.1-inch iPhone would come with a lower-resolution display. Other items that Kuo has talked about on the smartphones include all three having a full-screen edge-to-edge design and a TrueDepth camera like what is found in the iPhone X today.
