US urges judge to reject AT&T/Time Warner court date proposal

A federal judge has scheduled March 19 as the start date for a trial that will determine the fate of AT&T's proposed merger with Time Warner.

In court on Thursday, AT&T was hoping for the trial to begin on February 20, while the Justice Department wanted it to begin on May 7.

AT&T had been pushing for an expedited trial in order to beat the merger's April 22 deadline.

The U.S. Justice Department last month sued to block AT&T's planned acquisition of Time Warner, saying the combination could raise prices for rivals and pay-TV subscribers while hampering the development of online video. They have hinted at a defense premised on how the deal will allow the merged company to "compete more effectively against market-leading cable incumbents and insurgent tech giants".
