After a comprehensive bidding process run by the BBC's Local News Partnerships division, Citizen News and Media - the company that runs the Citizen - was awarded a grant to hire a reporter in the New Year.

They will go to council meetings in Hackney and two other neighbouring boroughs, syndicating their reports out to some of the 700-plus media organisations that have signed up as partners.

As part of its current Charter, which runs until 2026, the BBC has earmarked £8 million annually for Local News Partnerships, as well as launching a new Shared Data Unit and a video and audio archive facility for regional news providers.

To be awarded the democracy reporter contracts, the 58 successful news organisations had to pass stringent criteria which included financial stability and a strong track record of relevant journalism in the area they were applying to cover.

The Sussex contract is one of 58 awarded nationally and announced today.

Ashley Highfield, chairman of the News Media Association, said: "The ground-breaking Local News Partnership between the NMA and the BBC is now becoming a reality which will benefit the BBC, local media and, most importantly, local communities".

'The initiative has moved the whole relationship between the BBC and the local media sector from confrontation to collaboration, and key benefits will include 150 new journalists on the ground holding public institutions to account on behalf of their readers'.

Brighton and Hove News editor Frank le Duc said: "We look forward to working with the Brighton and Hove Independent and Johnston Press as part of the BBC-funded Local Democracy Reporting Service".

The media groups awarded contracts by the BBC range from large publishers to the Shetland News.

Scotland initially benefits from 21 new local democracy reporters, London will have 12, Wales will have 11 and among the English regions there will be 19 in the North West of England, 14 in the West Midlands and 12 in the South of England.

This will lead to Johnston Press employing six local democracy reporters north of the border, covering Angus, Fife, Edinburgh, Lothian, Falkirk, Lanarkshire, Dunbartonshire and the Borders.

Some of the publishers and broadcasters who will be taking on the reporters include Trinity Mirror (63), Newsquest (37), Johnston Press (30) and Manx Radio (1).
