Convenience Store Installs Anti-Drug Lights To Deter Heroin Use In Bathrooms

Westmoreland County Sheetz store tests blue lights to deter heroin users from shooting up in its restrooms

A Pennsylvania gas station is testing whether blue lights in bathrooms can discourage drug use by making it hard for people to see their veins.

Sheetz said that the light is still in its testing phase, and this is the first store trying the blue-light experiment. That store, located on 325 Freeport St.in Parnassus, is the only one now using the new lights. "The light system in the restrooms at this New Kensington store (Westmoreland County) is created to help our customers and employees avoid risky situations".

"This system is being tested at just this store for the time being, and it is too early to see the full results at this time or discuss any plans to expand this test", Ruffner said.

The Tribune Review reports this year the county has had 144 confirmed deaths due to overdose.

Gateway Rehab's medical director, Dr. Neil Capretto, said the lights could decrease drug use in the bathrooms. "I am not sure if it is going to have a significant impact, but it is probably worth a try".

It is the only Sheetz with the lighting system.

"They'll do drugs everyplace", he told WJAC, an ABC affiliate in Washington. "It might be an initial distraction, but I really don't think it's going to deter them a whole lot".

They say drug users can feel for their veins when they can't see them.
