Saudi oil minister reaffirms OPEC output squeeze

France is ready to return the skulls of 37 Algerian resistance fighters killed in the mid-19th century, President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday during a visit to Algiers.

The French president said that returning African art and historical artifacts now in France to their rightful owners is one of his priorities.

The French leader also is meeting with Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia and President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

As a president candidate in February, Macron visited Algeria and called France's colonization of the Muslim territory a "crime against humanity".

France also wants to turn the page of the past, specifically the French colonialism of Algeria, which lasted 133 years and ended in the Algerian war of liberation.

They were to discuss the situation in Algeria's troubled neighbour, Libya, as well as co-operation on the fight against extremism in the Sahel region, according to the French presidency. At the time, protests were organized by people with ties to Christian and Jewish families who moved to French colonies in North Africa before being expelled when those countries became independent. "Within five years, I want all the necessary conditions to be available so that African heritage is returned to Africa", he said.

Hadda Hazem, the editor of El-Fadjr newspaper, told The Associated Press that because of Algeria's complex history with France "we have missed out on relations which would have been more beneficial to Algeria, such as with Germany, Europe's top economic power".

"We have to be more pragmatic".

Regarding Macron's visit to Doha, which is scheduled for several hours, French sources said that it comes within the "political consultation", especially that Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani visited Paris in September.
