Mogherini Tillerson discuss Jerusalem Iran

"The aspirations of both parties must be fulfilled and a way must be found through negotiations to resolve the status of Jerusalem as the future capital of both states", European Union foreign chief Federica Mogherini said in a statement.

"We believe that any move that could derail the possibility of re-launching talks for instance moves around Jerusalem will be detrimental in immediate terms and in the perspective of opening diplomatic process in the Middle East", she said.

The remarks by Federica Mogherini, the high representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy, came as President Trump is weighing a decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital city - a controversial move that would nearly certainly complicate peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians.

The kingdom also reiterated its unwavering position on Jerusalem and its firm and lasting support for the Palestinian people in asserting their legitimate rights and establishing an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, it said.

The EU called on all parties on the ground and in the wider region "to show calm and restraint in order to prevent any escalation".

"The EU stands ready to support this process and will continue to engage with both parties and its regional and global partners, including within the Quartet, towards this end".

The decision, if acted upon, would threaten the "meaningful peace process" and the two-state solution, Mogherini said during a joint press conference with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson Tuesday.

"This step, if taken, will be in contradiction of the principle of not affecting final status negotiations, and contradicts worldwide resolutions that emphasize the historical and firm rights of the Palestinian people regarding Jerusalem", said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

Trump has also vowed to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, though he is expected to temporarily punt on that move on Wednesday and sign a waiver keeping the facility in Tel Aviv for at least another six months.
