Air New Zealand said problems with Rolls-Royce engines on its aircraft have forced the carrier to ground some worldwide flights.

Air New Zealand is cancelling some flights and retiming others due to maintenance requirements on the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines that power its Boeing 787-9 fleet.

Air New Zealand Ltd on Thursday said it would cancel and delay some global flights over the coming weeks because engines on its Boeing Co 787-9 jets manufactured by Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC required early maintenance.

Rolls-Royce said in August that components on some Trent 1000 engines were wearing out earlier than expected, according to reports.

Rolls-Royce did not have spare engines available while the maintenance work was being undertaken, Air New Zealand said in an announcement to the stock exchange.

On Thursday a spokesperson for Rolls-Royce told Reuters it was working with Air New Zealand to minimise disruption, adding that it's "not uncommon for long-term engine programmes to experience technical issues during their life".

It comes as the New Zealand Transport Accident Investigation Commission investigates two incidents involving "engine abnormalities" on the carrier's services this week.

And on Tuesday, the airline's flight to Tokyo Narita also returned to Auckland due to what the TAIC again said were "abnormal indications on one of the engines".

"Our investigation team is working closely with the airline, Civil Aviation Authority, engine-manufacturer Rolls Royce, and our colleague agencies in the United Kingdom and USA".
