He had a cameo in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", and now has a lead role in the sequel, "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald".

On her official site, the author said she and the film's producers were concerned by the stories in the press about Depp and acknowledged fans' concerns, but stood by their casting decision. Many - but not all - of the critical fans are upset specifically because of the domestic abuse allegations made by Depp's ex-wife Amber Heard.

Depp had a short cameo as the feared dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the first Fantastic Beasts movie previous year and will play a much larger role in its sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald. "Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting, but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movie". That Twitter spat allegedly resulted in J.K. Rowling blocking the user, which, if nothing else, calls the timing of this statement into question.

Rowling added that while "the huge, mutually supportive community that has grown up around Harry Potter is one of the greatest joys of my life", she found it "difficult, frustrating and at times painful" to remain silent on the Depp issue. For me personally, the inability to speak openly to fans about this issue has been hard, frustrating and at times painful.

She continued: "The agreements that have been put in place to protect the privacy of two people, both of whom have expressed a desire to get on with their lives, must be respected".

'However, conscience isn't governable by committee. Rowling accepts that fans may not be happy with Depp's addition to the cast, but also says, "we all have to do what we believe to be the right thing", in both fictional and real worlds.

Warner Bros and director David Yates have also issued statements in support of Depp.

Depp's character is expected to play a larger role in "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindewald", which is slated for a November 2018 release.

Heard got a temporary restraining order against Depp in 2016, accusing him of being "verbally and physically abusive" during their marriage.

Yates and Heyman's joint statement said they tried to be "sensitive" to both parties. "There will be no further public statements about this matter". We recognized the magnitude of the issues raised and understood the strength of feeling expressed. "Neither party has made false accusations for financial gains". "With Johnny, it seems to me there was one person who took a pop at him and claimed something". "Whatever accusation was out there doesn't tally with the kind of human being I've been working with".
