Man found murdered in his flat was a sex offender, police reveal

Flowers were left at the scene on New Butt Lane on Wednesday after news of the killings emerged

Detective Superintendent Paul Monk said there was known motive for the gory killings and Mr Brown's conviction in 1999 for a sex offence, for which he served four years in prison, was not "screaming out" as a possibility.

A neighbour saw him alive and well at his home in Deptford at around 8pm on 30 November and his daughter visited the flat to check up on Mr Brown at around midday two days later.

He added that the killers had tried to hide Mr Brown's death and there had been an "attempt to dismember his body" after his death.

Mr Monk said that Mr Brown, a regular gambler who placed "very small bets" every day at the Paddy Power shop in Deptford High Street, did not visit the bookmakers on Friday and it is possible he was killed before his daughter arrived. Police were contacted by a member of his daughter's family early on December 4 after she failed to return to her home in Southwark having been to check on the welfare of her father. Post-mortem examinations disclosed both were strangled and that attempts were made to dismember and hide the man's body; no attempt was made to dismember his daughter's body.

Their bodies were found in Noel Brown's flat in the early hours of Monday morning.

Her father, said police, had "a significant routine" but was not seen after Thursday, November 30. That was the last sighting of Marie alive.

Mr Monk said: "One of our key lines of inquiry is to establish if the suspect or suspects were known to Noel and if Marie disturbed them".

Police said there was speculation the murders were connected with a large gambling win, but that there was "no evidence to suggest this was the case". Detectives are searching for two men seen visiting the flat in the days before the deaths.

Appealing for help from the public, he added: "One of the possibilities I'm investigating is that these people were known to Noel so I'm particularly keen to hear from anybody that knew Noel, knew his lifestyle and knew people he may associate with".

Marie Brown was a crèche leader at a Nunhead primary school with an 18-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old daughter with autism.
