EW Unveils Fiery First Look At Sophie Turner's Jean Grey In X-Men Dark Phoenix

A first look at X-Men: Dark Phoenix has been released, along with plot details about Jean Grey's turn to the dark side. Her hair is literally on fire - the last time we saw Jean Grey in "X-Men: Apocalypse", she was given a new uniform to train in the Danger Room after incinerating En Sabah Nur, officially becoming a new "X-Men" recruit.

Based partially on Chris Claremont's Dark Phoenix saga, it's a storyline Kinberg previously attempted to tell in his screenplay for 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, but the studio reduced it into a subplot.

But perhaps the most interesting photo is the one that depicts Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) and several of his X-Men at a rainy funeral. This likely shows Jean Grey during her first transformation into Dark Phoenix, because I can't imagine Turner walking around almost nude throughout the entire film (though they did that with Mystique, so what do I know). "Pride is starting to get the better of him, and he is pushing the X-Men to more extreme missions", Kinberg says. In the next movie, out November 2, 2018, the X-Men team is dispatched to space for a rescue mission.

There will reportedly be a "massive twist" about halfway through the movie, and it'll have longterm effects for the franchise. My bet is on either Lawrence's Mystique or Nicholas Hoult's Beast, both of whom would have a major impact given that they've been with the franchise since X-Men: First Class, as opposed to killing off some newish character audiences aren't exactly attached to just yet. The movie becomes a fight for Jean's soul as Phoenix threatens to overtake her mind and divide the X-Men, particularly Jean and her mentor, Charles. "There's a lot of sacrifice and a lot of suffering".

"Simon and I were talking about the character and I said, 'I keep thinking of the vet who tells you you need to put your dog down, '" says the actress of her inspiration.

"[Mystique] has grown up a lot", states Jennifer Lawrence. "What happens when the person you love the most falls into darkness?"
