Kumbh Mela on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage

The external affairs ministry today said the recognition was accorded by the Inter-governmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, an entity which works under UNESCO.

"The art of the Neapolitan Pizzaiuolo is UNESCO Cultural Heritage", said Agriculture Minister Maurizio Martina via Twitter.

The decision to recognise the Kumbh Mela was taken at its ongoing meeting in Jeju, South Korea.

The inscription of Kumbh Mela was recommended by the expert body, which examines in detail nominations submitted by Member States. The committee observed it was the largest peaceful congregation of pilgrims on earth.

Rome, December - UNESCO said Thursday that the art of the Neapolitan "Pizzaiuolo" (pizza maker) has been put on its prestigious Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The inscription of Kumbh is the third in two years after the addition of Yoga and the Parsi festival Nouroz on December 2016.

Kamancha is an essential part of musical culture in both countries, and while crafting the instrument represents a direct source of earning a living, craftspeople also perceive the art as a strong part of the intangible cultural heritage of their communities.

In 2003, the UNESCO General Conference adopted the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Heritage as an global treaty acknowledging that cultural heritage is more than tangible places, monuments and objects; it also encompasses traditions and living expressions. The committee also noted that knowledge and skills related to the Kumbh are transmitted through the "Guru-Shishyaparampara parampara", which ensures the continuity and viability of this festival in perpetuity.

Other practices to receive resources include Botswana's Dikopelo folk music, songs about herding and milking from Colombia and Venezuela, Mongolian traditional worship, the Taskiwin martial dance from Morocco and traditional poetry recitals from the United Arab Emirates.
