Crystal Palace fans have received an apology from Sussex police over claims that supporters tried to get into last week's match at Brighton with knives and knuckledusters.

The VAR is now being used in Italy and Germany and was employed for the first time in an official game in Britain during the worldwide friendly between England and Germany in November, when it was not called on.

January's third-round FA Cup clash between Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace will be the first competitive club match in England where VAR is used.

The trials, which will also include next month's League Cup semi-final fixtures, are being led by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, the group which officiates all Premier League, English Football League and Football Association matches.

"The FA has always been open to trialling new innovations and was heavily involved in the advancement of goal-line technology before it was introduced", said the FA's director of professional game relations Andy Ambler.

"The trialling of the VAR system in this season's Emirates FA Cup from the third round is a continuation of that and further demonstrates that whilst being the most famous and historic domestic cup competition in the world it is also modern, progressive and innovative".

VAR, which was trialed in England's goalless draw with Germany in November, is used in game-changing situations - goals, penalties and straight red cards.

The VAR will automatically check every relevant incident and will inform the referee of any clear and obvious error.
