Use of 'grid girls' in Formula 1 is under review - Ross Brawn

Grid girls at the Mexican Grand Prix

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, F1 managing director of motorsports Ross Brawn said that the use of grid girls is a "delicate topic" and a decision will soon be made on their future. "There's a lot of people that respect the tradition of the grid girls and there's people who feel that it has become a bit dated, so we're addressing that".

Chief executive officer Chase Carey, who took over from Bernie Ecclestone when American corporation Liberty Media bought the sport early this year, added, "What we need to do is get as many points of view as possible and make a decision right for the future of the sport".

Brawn said: "We're trying to respect all parties".

Red Bull boss Christian Horner: "We've had grid boys and that's been criticised". Among their duties in F1 are holding umbrellas or driver name-boards on the grid, and lining the corridor through which the drivers walk on their way to the podium. Many fans have criticised the objectification of women while others say there's more pressing issues for Liberty to think about.

Individual women can make their own choices about what they'd like to be, and that includes becoming grid girls or the equivalent.

Carey said that the matter wasn't high on the priority list when he took on his job.

"I don't think it will be a personal decision for me".

Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo told the BBC he thinks grid girls are cool and doesn't see "any downside" to having them, because "the umbrella girls, the grid girls" were what he grew up with.

Brawn admits some may view this as outdated in today's society, whilst others see it as a tradition, but admitted their use would be reviewed as part of plans to modernise the sport.

Silverstone boss Stuart Pringle told 5 live's Grid Girls programme he believes it is "outdated", adding: "Lycra can stay in the 1970s and 80s for me, I don't want any of that tarty nonsense". We'll update if we hear back.
