OnePlus Could Be Sued For Face Unlock Patent Infringement

A camera is used for providing images to the facial recognition software where the display operates in a first mode for displaying images to a user and in a second mode for illuminating the user's face for detection by the camera. While the Face Unlock technology on the OnePlus 5T has received rave reviews from fans and critics alike, one company is definitely not a fan. Taking a cue from OnePlus 5T's video on Forbes, OnePlus has at the very least infringed on SensibleVision's illumination patent.

It is also worth noting that patents are only valid in jurisdictions where they were granted. While talking to mysmartprice, George Brostoff, SensibleVision co-founder and CEO revealed that OnePlus could be infringing on the company's illumination patent. We have been doing this for years.

Considering the patent application, it looks like any device that features the biometric authentication with the camera as the source may be infringing on SensibleVision's patent. Many of their patents are licensed in the U.S. and even if OnePlus was found to be infringing on their patents, it would not make sense financially as the settlement payment would be quite less considering OnePlus' limited reach in the USA market.

Brostoff refused to divulge further details citing that SensibleVision has since handed the matter over to its legal firm, which probably means that we might hear more about this in the near future.

SensibleVision is a company that works on facial recognition and biometric systems.

By the way, you might want to keep the company name of SensibleVision in mind. However, the happiness is appearing to be short-lived as it may allegedly get hit by a lawsuit over patent infringement by SensibleVision, a company that specializes in developing facial recognition and biometric authentication technology. This is called Global Patent Licence Agreement (GPLA). While it's not easy to file and win patent lawsuits against Chinese companies in China, Lakshane suggests that SensibleVision can at least potentially begin patent infringement proceedings in the U.S., where it has filed for the aforementioned patent.
