Vijay Rupani to take charge as Gujarat chief minister for second time

The new government, led by Vijay Rupani, will be sworn in on Tuesday, Gujarat BJP spokesperson Harshad Patel said in a statement on Sunday.

Rupani supporters are celebrating outside the BJP office in Gujarat's Gandhinagar. In a span of two years, the 61-year-old rose among the ranks, first getting cabinet rank in Anandiben Patel's government and then becoming president of BJP's state unit in February 2016, after the party did poorly in local body elections.

The selection of Rupani once again indicated BJP president Shah's unwillingness to go on the defensive, but assert himself on the organisation.

The 13th Gujarat Assembly was formally dissolved by the Governor while accepting the resignations.

Nitin Patel was given the Deputy Chief Minister post at the same time.

Both Rupani and Nitin Patel will take oath as Gujarat CM and deputy CM respectively.

Rupani, who won the Assembly polls by a margin of over 50,000 votes from the Rajkot West seat, was unanimously elected leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislature party at a meeting on Friday, which was attended by all the MLAs. He's been a member of the BJP since its establishment in 1980.

The BJP had registered a sixth straight Assembly poll win in the key western state on December 18, winning 99 seats in the 182-member House.

The BJP, which came to power in Himachal Pradesh with a thumping majority, may pick one of its MLAs as the Chief Minister, with five-time MLA Jairam Thakur being seen as the frontrunner, according to indications on Thursday.

Rathore, who had been a Congressman for over two decades, contested from Lunawada in Gujarat elections, after his party refused to field him as their official candidate.
