Police say Phoenix baby bent in half by father has died

A Phoenix infant has died of injuries he suffered after his father bent him in half and pressed on him because he wouldn't stop crying, according to Phoenix police and court records.

Phoenix police and fire officials were called to the east Phoenix home where Robert Resendiz said his 6-month-old son was not breathing, according to court records.

The baby's mom told police her son was "awake and alert" when she left for work Tuesday morning. Doctors there told police that the infant had lacerations to his liver and pancreas, a broken wrist and bruising on his thigh.

He allegedly told police that he did it to get his son to stop crying.

Phoenix police confirmed Tuesday the baby died of his injuries on December 21.

Resendiz is due back in court Wednesday. He said he didn't release the pressure until the baby stopped moving and was limp. The mother began texting Resendiz around 9:45 a.m.

According to court documents, Resendiz, 30, called 911 at 12:45 p.m. on December 19, after telling a police dispatcher that he had woken up to find the child "unresponsive and not breathing", AzFamily.com reported.

Resendiz was initially booked on child abuse charges.

A judge set his bond at $250,000. He also admitted to biting the baby twice, records said. "The defendant stated he did not mean to cause the injuries but was frustrated".
