Border Breaches Up in December, but Trump Effect Remains in Force

Trump said as he looked and motioned at Nielsen.

After a sharp drop in the number of undocumented immigrants attempting to cross the border at the beginning of the Trump administration, the President and his administration frequently cited the low numbers as evidence that Trump's immigration policy works. Interestingly, the "big, handsome wall" that President Trump promised during his campaign rallies has shrunk from 2,000 miles to about 300 miles, in addition to refurbishing some of the 650 miles of fencing built since the 1990s.

In the last month of the year, however, the number of families and unaccompanied minors making illegal crossings jumped once again.

As talks on comprehensive immigration reform progress, so have the discussions on the logistics of a border wall.

The president is rushing to deliver a fully funded secure border wall before the 2018 mid-term congressional elections. "The initial effects of Trump's new approach, which really scared people from coming, [have] worn off somewhat".

"We want DACA to happen", Trump said Saturday. Yes, but Mexico will pay.

When Nieto indicated his government has no interest in helping Trump fulfill his campaign promise by paying for the wall, Trump said he understood, but couldn't say so publicly, and urged Nieto to do the same. We should remember that candidate Trump stated many times that his "big, lovely wall" would only cost $4 billion.

The $4 billion estimate came from a man who states, "I went to the best colleges for college; I was a very excellent student".

Additionally, Warren said, many people who have been stopped by the Border Patrol in recent years are seeking asylum - including some who simply walk up to agents and surrender.

'The Democrats have been told, and fully understand, that there can be no DACA without the desperately needed WALL at the Southern Border and an END to the awful Chain Migration & ridiculous Lottery System of Immigration etc.

Last week, however, Mr Trump reiterated his plan during a news conference at Camp David, the presidential country retreat in Maryland.

"You can not say anymore that the United States is going to pay for the wall", Trump told Nieto. He told reporters: "I have a very good relationship with Mexico. But yes, in some form, Mexico will pay for the wall". Data from the Department of Homeland Security and research groups like the New York-based Center for Migration Studies show that most immigrants living in the country illegally now simply overstay legally obtained short-term visas - and did not sneak across the border. Congress and the American people have entrusted to you the security of our country. Seven years to build a wall?!

And then there are hundreds of potential lawsuits, construction delays, union problems, environmental problems, escalating construction costs - and enough Democratic U.S. senators to vote against spending even 10 cents on any wall - to either stop the project or shut down the U.S. government.
