Hixon, 36, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the Canyon County coroner's office told the Idaho Statesman.

Hixon resigned from the Idaho Legislature previous year, following news he was the focus of a criminal investigation related to alleged sexual abuse, according to the Idaho Attorney General's Office. Rep. Jarom Wagoner (R-Caldwell) has since been appointed and sworn in to replace Hixon at the Idaho House.

In early December, Hixon was arrested in Ada County on misdemeanor driving under the influence and misdemeanor resisting arrest charges. "Our thoughts go first to family and friends who are suffering from this loss", Idaho House Speaker Scott Bedke announced to the rest of the House on Tuesday, according to The Spokesman-Review.

"I hope that my efforts have helped improve the lives of my constituents in District 10, as well as all Idahoans", Hixon wrote in his resignation letter.

Bedke said, "We should ... support those who are close to us when they are struggling. Please remember Brandon's family in your prayers".
