Boston police are investigating a pair of daylight shootings that left two young men dead and a third hospitalized.

The deaths were the city's first homicides of 2018.

One person was shot and killed on Whittier Street in Roxbury at 1:46 p.m., police said. Officers heard the sound of gunfire while patrolling on foot and responded. One of the men was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said in a statement. Police said the shooting was not random.

The second shooting happened shortly after 2 p.m.in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant at a busy intersection in Dorchester. Both victims, said to be men in their 20s, were taken to area hospitals.

No arrests have been made in either attack.

Four schools - Madison Park Technical Vocational School, John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics & Science, Jeremiah E. Burke High School, and the Dearborn STEM Academy - were locked down, meaning no one was allowed into the buildings, in the wake of the two shootings.

Later in the evening, police said two more people were shot in the 500 block of Warren Street in Roxbury.

Investigators do not believe there is any connection between the incidents which occurred less than 30 minutes apart on Thursday afternoon.
