At least three Indian Army soldiers were injured after they fell from a helicopter in a freak incident during rehearsals for Army Day celebrations in New Delhi.

Three paratroopers have been injured while practising slithering operations from a rope hanging from a Dhruv advanced light helicopter (ALH) here.

Slithering is an exercise where troops are dropped from a helicopter in an area of operation using a rope attached to the chopper. None of the soldiers suffered any serious injuries, the Indian Army confirmed. A video of the entire incident has gone viral on social media. While two army men successfully complete the drill, the third one falls straight to the ground, as the rope slips off the chopper.

According to reports, the "slithering operation" was part of the "Army Day" rehearsals taking place in Army's parade ground in the national capital. The army authorities have called for an investigation into the matter.

Though the actual reason behind the incident is not clear yet but as per an Army official, the incident happened due to boom malfunction and not due to the rope that was used for the operation.

Army Day is observed on 15 January every year to honour Lieutenant General KM Kariappa, who took over as the first commander-in-chief of the Indian Army on this day.
