Burned by e book, Trump takes concern with nation's libel legal guidelines

"Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House", the recently published book by Michael Wolff, angered Trump last week when it was revealed that former campaign strategist and White House adviser Steve Bannon made disparaging comments about Trump and his son, Donald Trump Jr.

Trump said those who have been libeled should have "meaningful recourse". And that bar is even higher for libel suits brought by public officials because of the power they wield in society.

Before the press was led out of the room, the president concluded by saying the administration would be looking into the country's libel laws, pushing for "meaningful recourse" in the courts for those who've been "abused".

He called the country's current laws "a sham and a disgrace", claiming that they "don't represent American values or American fairness".

Speaking from a prepared statement before a Cabinet meeting, Trump blasted the current laws as "a sham and a disgrace". Trump immediately labeled it libelous and told a Miami TV station that USA libel laws should be more like those in the U.K, which, he said, give aggrieved public figures like himself a "good chance of winning". "And I think what the American people want to see is fairness". Were going to take a very, very strong look at that. "You wouldn't have things like that happen where you can say whatever comes to your head".

Trump's renewed calls to make it easier to sue for defamation come following the publication of an unflattering new book by author Michael Wolff.

Trump's longtime personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, filed a defamation lawsuit against BuzzFeed News for publishing, last January, a salacious and mostly unsubstantiated intelligence dossier that purported to describe how Russian Federation had aided the Trump campaign. The president has routinely fired vitriol at mainstream media outlets and previously made a veiled, ominous threat towards NBC's broadcasting license.

He also pledged during his presidential campaign to "open up" libel laws "so when they write purposely negative and disgusting, false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money".

State courts and state legislatures are responsible for codifying protections against libel and defamation. "Now he wants to change the libel laws".

The Supreme Court's 1964 landmark freedom of the press ruling determined that the media couldn't knowingly report false information about public figures like Trump without taking a legal hit.
