Fusion GPS, co-founded by former Wall Street Journal reporter Glenn Simpson, "recklessly placed [the dossier] beyond their control and allowed it to fall into the hands of media devoted to breaking news on the hottest subject of the day: the Trump candidacy", ABC quoted from one of the lawsuits.

Last week another attorney working for Trump personally, Charles Harder, sent a cease and desist letter to the publisher and author of the new book "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House", seeking to stop further distribution. BuzzFeed, however, was less restrained. Fusion GPS then hired Mr Steele to investigate Mr Trump's connections with Russian Federation.

One thing is certain: this story is only just beginning.

With the filings, Cohen becomes the closest person to the President to take on the dossier's explosive claims in court.

BuzzFeed responded with a Twitter post saying the dossier continues to be the subject of investigations by Congress and intelligence agencies, was shown to two United States presidents and described in detail by news outlets worldwide.

President Donald Trump's personal attorney, Michael Cohen, has reportedly filed a defamation suit against BuzzFeed after the news outlet published the unsubstantiated collection of memos known as the Trump-Russia dossier past year, according to Bloomberg News.

The lawyer Michael Cohen, filed the lawsuit in NY state on Tuesday, almost a year after BuzzFeed published the dossier commissioned by political opposition research firm Fusion GPS. "My name was included only because of my proximity to the president".

Bloomberg said Cohen provided the complaint and a confirmation email from the court system that he had filed the suit, but it could not immediately be independently confirmed that the suit had been filed.

As the seriousness of the Russian Federation investigation has become clearer, the pro-Trump line has shifted from dismissing the dossier to stressing its role in the investigation: The dossier, some of Mr. Trump's defenders now say, played too big a part, given that a portion of Mr. Steele's funding came from political enemies of Mr. Trump, including the Democratic National Committee. BuzzFeed later redacted its online version of the dossier to exclude those named and issued an apology shortly after the lawsuit was filed.

Mittenthal added: "This is not the first time Trump's personal lawyer has attacked the free press, and we look forward to defending our First Amendment rights in court".

Since then, congressional probes have revealed that FBI officials involved in the investigation at the time had also expressed personal enmity for Trump and discussed an "insurance plan" in the case of Trump's election. He used his network of contacts in east European intelligence services to examine Mr Trump's ties in Russian Federation for Fusion GPS, which was originally hired the candidate's Republican opponents. Trump has said he expects Mueller to be fair to him and that he and his campaign never colluded with the Russian government.
