CAF takes control of ref payments in battle against match-fixing

"This historic decision is a materialisation of a campaign promise by the CAF President (Ahmad Ahmad)".

In a move described as "landmark" by many, Confederation of African Football (CAF) has today announced that it will take over payment of referees officiating global matches.

Previously, CAF's rules stablished that host associations should be in charge of covering the refs' payment.

Lamptey was banned by Federation Internationale de Football Association last September after he was found guilty of "unlawfully influencing (a) match result" when he incorrectly awarded hosts South Africa a penalty against Senegal in a World Cup qualifier in November 2016.

He added the decision by CAF to pay referees directly was a good initiative and that it would also help reducing costs for local associations.

"Until now, the regulations required host associations to pay these indemnities. The decision reduces the financial burden on national associations and also eliminates an ethical challenge because it removes the suspicion perceived between national associations and the referees", the confederation said.

It is the second time in a month that CAF has taken action to minimise the threat of corruption in refereeing after it removed its Best Referee in Africa award in December. According to the Confederation's president, Ahmad Ahmad, the award was scrapped over fears it could "breed corruption".

The Ahmad-led administration has moved the Africa Cup of Nations from January/February to June/July to avoid the consistent struggle between European clubs and African countries over their release of players for the continent's flagship football competition.

5- As part of preparations for Total CHAN Ethiopia 2020, a CAF inspection team will conduct an inspection in the country during the first quarter of 2018.
