England vs Nigeria and Costa Rica in June World Cup warm-up friendlies

The opposition at Elland Road this time will be Costa Rica, who were, in fact, the shock winners of England's group at the last World Cup.

"We've mostly played European opposition up to now and the Brazil game (a 0-0 draw in November) acted as a reminder that we need to challenge ourselves in different ways as a team", Southgate said.

"But it's not just about the games we've got in the group stages, but hopefully beyond that as well".

The Three Lions are up against the Super Eagles at the iconic Wembley on June 2.

England added fellow World Cup qualifiers Nigeria and Costa Rica to their pre-World Cup friendlies schedule on Wednesday.

England played games in Sunderland and Manchester ahead of Euro 2016 and Southgate is expecting a good reception from fans.

This is fantastic news for the people Yorkshire, who will have the chance to see England's national team play on their own doorstep at Leeds United's Elland Road for the first time since 2002.

England defeated Nigeria 1-0 in a highly entertaining friendly at the old Wembley in 1994 with David Platt scoring the only goal.

England will play two warm-up games in June before flying to Russian Federation, with the Football Association also set to confirm a Wembley friendly against Nigeria on June 2.

Gareth Southgate's side also face Costa Rica's central American neighbours Panama in Russian Federation, with Belgium completing Group G.
