Furor grows as patient discharged in gown, socks on cold night

"I saw the unthinkable: another human in a wheelchair being wheeled out in the dead of cold", he said by phone Thursday.

The hospital has pledged to hold the individuals involved accountable for the incident and promised to interview everyone who interacted with the patient, including the hospital workers shown in the video.

The man who came to the aid of a disoriented woman discharged from a Baltimore hospital on a frigid night wearing only a gown and socks says she's been reunited with family.

Imamu Baraka, identified in local reports as the person who sought to help the woman, told The Associated Press he was so angry he chose to record Tuesday night's events on cellphone video, fearing no one would believe him if he reported a woman being left at a bus stop like that.

Therapist Imamu Baraka runs a modest practice along Howard Street just behind the University of Maryland's midtown hospital campus.

He described frigid temperatures in the 30s and a cold wind blowing at the woman's hospital gown, exposing her to the elements. I became ... irritated and fearful for the young lady.

"Then you need to call the police", retorted Baraka.

After approaching the security guards, Baraka tried for minutes at an end to get an answer from them regarding the woman's condition. "They then went inside of the building".

While on campus, Baraka noticed a woman dressed in white, hospital gown was sitting all by herself in an empty bus station, apparently waiting for something or someone. Baraka also said that the woman must have been discharged or kicked out of the medical institutions since all of her belongings, including her clothes, were carefully wrapped in plastic bags and placed near her in the bus stop. She grunted and shouted, and appeared to say at one point: "Please help me!" In the post, he pasted the vision and mission of the hospital and asked them to do better.

It wasn't immediately clear what happened to the woman after she was driven back toward the hospital.

Imamu Baraka filmed what is now the viral video of a woman named Cheryl as she paced and moaned outside a hospital in a case of "patient dumping".

"We share the shock and disappointment of many who have viewed the video showing the discharge of a patient from the Emergency Department of UMMC Midtown the night of January 9", Lisa Clough, a spokeswoman for the hospital, said in a statement. "We are taking this matter very seriously, conducting a thorough review, and are evaluating the appropriate response, including the possibility of personnel action".

Said Suntha, "We do not believe that what occurred Tuesday night in any way defines who we are as an organization". A witness who captured the incident on his cell came to her assistance.
