Goa team here to check on Mahadayi

CM Manohar Parrikar directed state Chief Secretary to write a letter to the Karnataka govt asking it to stop the construction work

The Goa government had alleged yesterday that neighbouring Karnataka, disrespecting a Supreme Court order, had resumed work on a canal at Kankumbi.

Parrikar had last week said that his government would not allow the expansion of coal handling at Mormugao Port Trust (MPT).

"Let Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar write a letter to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over the sharing of Mahadayi water for drinking water goal. The Goa government's decision not to share water is against the principles of the federal system", he added.

In the wake of January 25 Karnataka Bandh called by Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj on the Mahadayi water sharing issue, the noted producer and KFCC President Sa Ra Govindu appealed to the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi to intervene on the issue.

The party's Goa spokesperson Yatish Naik said such a written assurance was necessary since the assurances made by state Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar "could not be trusted upon considering his past track record" nor should it be taken as a "guarantee". A few weeks ago, Yeddyurappa had claimed that Goa CM Parrikar had expressed his willingness to release water from the Mahadayi for parched north Karnataka but the Goa BJP later dismissed such claims. As Karnataka is going to polls later this year the issue that was a farmers' movement, has turned into an all-out political slugfest as the two national parties, Congress and the BJP, have jumped in with protests and counter-protests on the issue in the recent past.
