Jordan Spieth's quadruple-bogey puts him six shots behind in Sony Open

Twice major victor Johnson carded a bogey-free seven-under 63 in the afternoon wave that included a birdie at 18 to grab a share of the lead with early starter Kirk, who stormed into the clubhouse with four birdies over the final six holes.

Both Kirk and Johnson carded seven-under rounds of 63 on the first day of the Honolulu tournament, to earn a one-shot lead over the chasing pack.

Open champion Jordan Spieth wants to get a 12th PGA Tour title under his belt before turning his attention to more major championship glory. He wound up with a quadruple-bogey 8, and even a pitch from the rough short of the ninth green that stopped inches away for birdie wasn't enough to appease him.

He signed his card, signed autographs and declined requests to speak to the media.

Kirk played bogey-free on a gorgeous day along the shores just up the road from Waikiki Beach and had a one-shot lead over Vaughn Taylor, Kyle Stanley and Talor Gooch among the early starters at Waialae Country Club.

Defending champion Justin Thomas, who opened the Sony Open a year ago with a 59 and went on to a record performance at Waialae Country Club, was among those playing in the afternoon.

Another Aussie, Steve Allan, was also at 2 under with a round that included an eagle, four birdies, ten pars, two bogeys and a double bogey.

Thomas, who went to Alabama, was paired with Aiken's Kevin Kisner, a former Georgia star. "I really had no expectations whether I was going to play good or bad after having some time off". That was first of three straight birdies, and he had ample more opportunities, including a shot that hit the pin on No. 10 and settled 3 feet away. He hit a tree with his next two shots before finally finding a greenside bunker.
