Major League Soccer teams set to get into world of esports gaming

The Portland Timbers will be among 19 MLS teams competing in Major League Soccer's new eMLS competition.

eMLS will feature eMLS Cup, MLS's elite competitive gaming event, where each club's pro will vie for an automatic berth in the EA SPORTS FIFA 18 Global Series Playoffs and a chance to be crowned the undisputed FIFA 18 World Champion at the FIFA eWorld Cup 2018 taking place in August this year. eMLS Cup will debut this April at PAX East, the enormously popular gaming culture festival in Boston that takes place this year from April 5-8 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. The eMLS league will only feature players from the US and Canada, and a number of real MLS teams will be hosting their own eMLS clubs. The three Canadians teams have yet to make an announcement about their pro gamers.

"This step forward into competitive gaming is a key component in our partnership with EA Sports to promote deeper engagement and connections between MLS supporters and millions of Federation Internationale de Football Association players around the world", said MLS Business Ventures President and Managing Director, Gary Stevenson.

The NBA has already started qualifying for gamers hoping to be part of the NBA 2K League when it tips off in May.

Further details on the eMLS league structure and team player signings will be revealed in the coming weeks. After competing against each other, the overall top team from the eMLS will gain entry to the Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 Global Series Playoffs.

The NHL is expected to announce its esports plans soon. New York City FC became the first in the MLS to sign an esports player last April, and Christopher Holly said he was excited about eMLS.

MLS, the top level of professional soccer in the USA and Canada, joins Australia's A-League as real-world leagues that have pledged to create esports counterparts for the road to the Federation Internationale de Football Association eWorld Cup.

"We're honored to partner with MLS within the EA Sports FIFA 18 Global Series as we continue to help grow competitive gaming and soccer in North America", Todd Sitrin, the senior vice president and general manager of the competitive gaming division at EA, said in a press statement.

The hit Federation Internationale de Football Association video game franchise is developed at EA's Vancouver-area studio.
