New York City Cancels Financial Incentives For Aetna Headquarters Move

Aetna traces its roots in Hartford to 1819.

The insurance giant announced in June that it would move its headquarters to New York City beginning in late 2018 after almost two centuries in Hartford, Connecticut.

CVS Health Corp., which is buying Aetna, said Friday it will not relocate Aetna from Hartford.

Earlier this week, New York City said it was shelving a $9.6 million incentive package offered to Aetna, citing the uncertainty caused by the merger. CVS Health will continue to be headquartered in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

CVS Healthcare will keep Aetna Inc.'s operations in Hartford after it acquires the insurance company, a CVS official said Friday.

CVS' chief executive Larry Merlo met with Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin at city hall Thursday.

NY officials seem to think Aetna's changed its mind, saying the incentive package was withdrawn because the relocation is not moving forward. Aetna told WNPR in an email, "all Aetna locations will be evaluated as part of the integration planning process". Today's announcement confirms that CT is a tremendous place to do business, with a talent pipeline and quality of life that are second-to-none.

That's when pharmacy giant CVS purchased Aetna, raising questions about Aetna's future location plans.

He said he would advocate for Hartford with CVS Health leaders "to build a strong working partnership".

"Aetna's continued presence in Hartford is welcome news for the thousands of CT residents who depend on the company as a pillar of economic and community support, and a good omen for the city", said Blumenthal. "But I'm hopeful this decision is a sign that the company's new, permanent leadership will have their priorities straight once again", Murphy said in a statement on Friday.

"Aetna staying CT is good for both us and them", said Murphy.

Aetna, which is the third-largest health insurer in the country, employs more than 5,000 people in CT.
