SpaceX Says Rocket Worked Fine As Spy Satellite Reported Lost

According to the report of WSJ, the classified mission of Space X recovered the first stage of the booster with a landing at its Cape Canaveral facility, while the payload that was supposed to detach in the second stage has been lost or fallen back through the Earth's atmosphere after reaching space.

Zuma's launch was aired live via webcast by SpaceX, though the company cut away after the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket came back in for a landing. As Space.com reports: "we don't know which agency will operate the satellite, or if its mission is civilian or military". SpaceX is saying only that "reviews of the data indicate Falcon 9 performed nominally", or as expected. "Due to the classified nature of the payload, no further comment is possible".

Northrop Grumman built the multibillion-dollar satellite, code-named Zuma, and was responsible for choosing the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle, both officials said.

SpaceX and Zuma's operators likely knew that the satellite was still attached to the rocket's second stage, which would raise the question of why they did not delay the de-orbit and try to fix the problem. The firm is aiming to carry out one launch every two weeks.

Elon Musk's Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) successfully launched its first mission for the this year, on Sunday. That mission last year flew near the International Space Station at the same time two U.S. cargo craft arrived or departed.

A US spy satellite worth billions is presumed lost after failing to reach orbit during SpaceX's "most secretive" launch ever, reports CNET. Cheers erupted at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California as the rocket glided seamlessly down to the ground.

"We have nothing to add to the satellite catalog at this time", Navy Captain Brook DeWalt, a spokesman for the command, said in an email when asked if the new satellite was in orbit. But on the other side, SpaceX has not been officially confirmed the failure of the launch.

Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla, has said there is a good chance the new rocket could blow up, thus his own personal property will be the payload on top: his Tesla Roadster.

In a statement, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell said the company couldn't comment on the payload, but disputed allegations that the rocket itself malfunctioned.
