The statement also expresses sadness at the loss of lives from a recent outbreak of cholera in Lusaka and other parts of the country.

The Zambian government announced at the weekend that all gatherings, including church services, were now banned in areas affected by the spread of cholera, according to The Tablet.

The Archdiocese of Lusaka has cancelled all its church-sponsored programmes, while its pastoral coordinator, Fr Thomas Banda, indefinitely banned handshakes at all gatherings and said church meetings should only take place if absolutely necessary.

"Our hearts go to the many families who have lost their loved ones from the disease".

On January 8 the Council of Churches in Zambia, Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia, and Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a 'Statement of National Dialogue' lamenting the outbreak and condemning corruption and violence in the country. We pray for God's peace, comfort and encouragement during this time of national crisis.

"We support the efforts of other stakeholders in this battle against cholera and pledge ourselves to collaborate with government in addressing the epidemic", it continued.

Mr Mulder said containing the disease was an expensive undertaking, hence the need for stronger stakeholder participation, and that Zambians should practise good hygiene to prevent further spread of cholera.

Cholera is a water-borne diarrhoeal disease that can kill within hours if left untreated, but is easily cured with oral rehydration, intravenous fluids and antibiotics.

The cholera outbreak was initially linked to contaminated water from shallow wells, but investigations indicated that contaminated food was the main culprit.

Zambian defense forces have been ordered to clean up the streets of Lusaka to help control the epidemic.
