An explosion targeting an official from the Palestinian Hamas Movement went off Sunday midday in the southern city of Sidon, leaving the man's BMW engulfed in flames.

Ayman Shanaa, a Hamas official in Lebanon, said Mohammad Hamdan was "injured lightly in the legs by a auto bombing", but a medical official source said his wounds were severe.

"A bomb placed in a BMW in Sidon detonated, wounding Hamas official Mohammed Hamdan", a military source said.

Mohammad Hamdan is the brother of senior Hamas leader Osama Hamdan.

A medical source at the scene said Hamdan suffered serious wounds to his legs while opening the door to his vehicle, and was transported to hospital.

To its part, the Hamas representative in Lebanon, Ali Baraka, denied that Hamdan was injured, however, it was his brother who was injured.

The Lebanese Army also released a statement soon after the bombing, confirming that an explosion had targeted Hamdan as he was entering his vehicle.
