Facebook is about to jump into the consumer hardware business in a big way with a video chat device named "Portal", which will put it in direct competition with Amazon's hugely popular line of Echo voice-controlled devices, Cheddar has learned.

How will the new device is still unknown.

The Portal is said to announce in early May this year at the annual developer conference, with sales expected to begin in the second half of 2018.

Like Amazon's screen-equipped Echo Show, Facebook's Portal is created to work indoors and be controlled through voice commands.

In Facebook intend to submit their project as a way for family members and friends to stay connected through video chat, and other functions. But unlike the dynamics of Amazon, Facebook's emphasis on video, rather than the "smart" assistant.

Portal will be the first product to emerge from Facebook's troubled consumer hardware lab, Building 8. According to people familiar with Facebook's plans, Portal will be equipped with a wide-angle lens that is capable of recognizing individual faces and associating them with their Facebook accounts. It is also boosted with third party Apps as - Netflix and Spotify.

A Facebook spokesperson declined to comment for this story. Unfortunately, Facebook Portal will likely to cost $499 (or approx Rs 31,735) - significantly higher than the $299 (or approx Rs 14,627) Amazon Echo Show - a similar product with a touchscreen display, a camera and microphones. It is worth noting that the retail price of the Echo Show from Amazon is $ 229.
