Penn State hires running backs coach from Army West Point

Penn State head coach James Franklin filled the new 10 assistant coach position allowed by the NCAA by announcing the hiring Friday of David Corley as the Nittany Lions' new running back coach.

"David is a dynamic football coach who will be a great fit in our program", Franklin said in a statement.

With all FBS programs allowed to add a 10th assistant coach as of January 9, Franklin had been figuring out for some time how to rearrange his stuff and fill any needs as they presented themselves with Moorhead's departure.

Corley arrives at Penn State after coaching the wide receivers at Army and having previously coached the running backs at UConn and also at his alma-mater, William & Mary.

Now, Corley is a Nittany Lion - and he has quite a bit of talent to work with.

"My family and I are very excited about the opportunity to join the Penn State family". "I'm looking forward to working with this awesome staff and these outstanding student-athletes".

Corley comes to Happy Valley from Army, where he was wide receivers coach for the past two seasons.

Prior to his stint at Army, Corley was at the University of CT for three seasons where he served in a variety of roles, including running backs coach, special teams coordinator, wide receivers coach and director of player engagement.

Before joining coach Jeff Monken's program, Corley was a jack-of-all-trades coach at UConn, where he worked as special teams coordinator, receivers coach and running backs coach. He served as the quarterbacks coach from 2010-12. He went on to play in the Canadian Football League as well as the Arena Football League before ending his playing career in 2006.

A native of Salisbury, N.C., Corley started for four years at quarterback for the Tribe where he set program records for passing yards (9,805), total offense (10,948) and touchdown passes (73). He earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year in 1999 and was a three-time all-conference honoree (second team in 2001 and 2002; third team in 2000). Corley was inducted into the William & Mary Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

Corley and his wife, Lindsay, have a daughter, Charlie (7), and son, Bishop (4).
